Sorolla, a new dimension

An interactive installation Sorolla that transformed visitors’ of 'Sorolla, A New Dimension' own photographs into portraits painted in Sorolla’s style, reimagining his brushwork through the lens of AI. Housed within a specially designed photo booth, the installation autonomously detected and captured the faces of participants. Deep learning diffusion models — trained to emulate Sorolla’s unique painterly language — then reinterpreted each image, generating a personalized artwork that blurred the boundary between historical tradition and contemporary machine creativity.

The results were displayed on a large screen within the exhibition space, where they became part of the collective gallery alongside Sorolla’s masterpieces. Each visitor not only witnessed the transformation but also received a digital keepsake of their portrait, accessible instantly through a QR code. This process gave audiences the rare opportunity to see themselves woven into the narrative of an iconic artist’s work. More than a playful interaction, the installation was a meditation on the evolution of portraiture and the dialogue between human creativity and artificial intelligence. It invited audiences to reflect on how cultural heritage can be reactivated through technology, creating new forms of participation that bridge the past and present.

The project was developed as a freelance collaboration with a partner and produced in close partnership with a design studio. By combining deep learning diffusion models with a seamless multi-platform application, the installation brought Sorolla’s vibrant visual universe to life in a way that was both technically sophisticated and emotionally engaging.
