Retina, through the eyes of nature

Audiovisual piece that explores the encounter between nature and human intervention through the lens of artificial intelligence. A GAN network was trained exclusively with images of animals, forests, and other natural environments, creating an agent whose entire “worldview” was shaped by the organic and the wild. Into this system, images of urban and industrial landscapes were introduced—machines, buildings, infrastructures representing human presence and impact. The network, confronted with these unfamiliar inputs, responded by transforming and reinterpreting them through the filter of its learned natural vocabulary. By interpolating the latent spaces of these two visual domains, the piece generates a fluid animation where urban and industrial elements dissolve into natural forms and vice versa. This continuous morphing evokes both tension and hybridity, suggesting how human action is absorbed, resisted, or reimagined by the natural world—and how technology itself interprets these dynamics. The result is a meditative yet unsettling landscape, a vision of coexistence and disruption, where the artificial intelligence becomes both translator and mirror of our relationship with the environments we inhabit and transform.
